Taekwondo Selected for Summer Olympiade

Compulsory sport from 2017 on

Taekwondo has been selected as a compulsory sport of the FISU (International

University Sports Federation) Summer Universiade. A resolution to include taekwondo as a compulsory sport in the Summer Universiade from 2017 passed unanimously at the FISU Executive Committee meeting in Erzurum, Turkey on November 12-14, 2009.

In the next year the 11th World University Taekwondo Championship will be held in Vigo, Spain from June 29th to July 4th, 2010 and the 12th World Taekwondo Championship will be held in Pochon, S. Korea in 2012. Taekwondo was first introduced as a Summer Universiade program in Daegu, S. Korea in 2003. The popularity of university taekwondo has increased dramatically in every subsequent Summer Universiade from Izmir, Turkey (2005), in Bangkok, Thailand (2007), and in Belgrade, Serbia (2009) where Poomsae was officially added along with Kyorugi in the 25th Summer Universiade.

Therefore, all future WUTC and Summer Universiades will hold combined competition for 5 divisions of Poomsae and 16 divisions of Kyorugi. The 26th Summer Universiade will be hosted by Shenzhen, China on August 12-23, 2011. Kazan, Russia will host the 2013 and Kwangju, S. Korea will host the 2015. Taekwondo athletes in the WUTC and Universiade will be able to win four gold medals by successfully participating in three poomsae divisions and one kyorugi division.
